We are often asked- How do we find new designers? What do you look for in a designer? Well, the answer to that question is easy and Patricia Raskin, the designer for Anne Sylvain Handbags is the epitome of what we look for- Independent design with an eye for quality, craftsmanship and style!
Patricia Raskin formed her handbag company- naming it in honor of her grandparents- because she wanted to create beautiful, luxurious handbags without sacrificing craftsmanship and style. Here is a bit of our conversation:
What is ‘luxury’ leather? Patricia explains that quality leather has a certain look that gets better over time and quality craftsmanship exhibits certain hallmark details- for example- Folded, not painted edges, leather linings.
What inspires your designs? “My Le Mans Collection is named for the 24 Hour race held in France since 1923 and inspired by the sleek shapes and mixes of unique materials found in my favorite cars. By the way, I have a Porsche named “Kate”, named after Catherine the Great!”
Why is it important to you to make your bags in the US? “I totally support products made here- we have superb craftspeople here and I want to create a product that we can truly be proud of. Producing in the US ensures that craftspeople are paid a real wage and work in humane conditions.”
Can true luxury be mass-produced? “Is a product truly luxurious if you see in on every street corner in every big city in the world? I don’t think so- I started my company because I love the atelier business model I see walking the streets of Paris and the unique items you find there. It is a way to mark your own style and adventurous spirit- items to wear over and over, taking great joy in their unique look. This is Circle&Square, as far as I can tell from my perch in Seattle!”
